Last week, our community gathered for an unforgettable evening at Applause for a Cause, the VAPA Foundation’s annual celebration supporting arts education for students across San Diego.
The evening was filled with joy, creativity, music, connection, and a powerful shared belief in what is possible when a community comes together around young people.
From the moment guests arrived, there was a sense of energy and excitement throughout the room. Students from San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts brought the audience to life with performances from Hairspray, reminding all of us of the confidence, artistry, and belonging that arts education helps nurture in students every day.
Guests explored a student art auction featuring incredible works created by young artists, contributed to a collaborative community art piece, and even joined in learning choreography from one of the musical numbers. Every part of the evening reflected the spirit of creativity and participation that sits at the heart of our mission.
Throughout the night, we shared stories from classrooms, schools, teaching artists, and community partners whose lives and work have been impacted through arts education programs supported by the VAPA Foundation.
What became so clear throughout the evening is that this work is about far more than performances or projects. The arts create spaces where students feel seen, heard, connected, and inspired. They help students discover confidence in themselves and connection with one another. They bring joy back into learning.
At the VAPA Foundation, we believe every student deserves access to meaningful arts experiences, regardless of zip code or circumstance. And what continues to inspire us most is the growing movement of schools, artists, community organizations, families, and philanthropic partners who are coming together around that shared vision.
Together, we are building a new model for arts education in San Diego. One rooted in partnership, creativity, and collective impact. One that brings arts experiences directly into classrooms and communities in ways that are thoughtful, intentional, and deeply meaningful for students.
