This summer Mid-City Music and VAPA Foundation had the joy of bringing exciting arts programs to San Diego Unified students at Clark Middle School. Teachers from Mid-City Music led classes such as “Pixel and Palette”, “Comic Sounds and Stories,” “Art Around the World,” and “Beat Builders!”
These classes were designed to give middle-school age students the opportunity to dive deep in 2D and 3D art, comic and story crafting, and music production. Mid-City Music educators brought their diverse expertise and backgrounds to share new skills with students over a six-week period for over four hours a day of instruction.
Our “Art Around the World” class traveled the globe by taking on a different country’s art history and artistic style through innovative projects and lesson plans. After camp was done, parent Alexis D. let us know she’d definitely recommend our camp to a friend, as “this camp is wonderful for any art lover and I appreciate that the teachers stepped out of the box with the curriculum. There is so much more than European & American art!”
The students in “Comic Sounds and Stories” had the chance to develop and design their own comic universe. Teachers led the students through all phases of graphic novel building, from storyboard and character design to comic illustration and layout. At the end of camp, students even got to present their comics and stories to all of the students in the program during the final presentation day!
Our collaborators, Mid-City Music, and the whole team at VAPA Foundation are pleased to have been a part of the Level Up 2024 summer of learning, in partnership with San Diego Foundation and San Diego Unified School District.
Collaborations such as these are one small part of our work as VAPA Foundation to enrich the lives of students through the arts.
