2022-23 Community Engaged Mural Program
The VAPA Department, with support from the VAPA Foundation, is offering a Community Engaged Mural (CEM) program that provides funding for materials and training for CEM leadership teams to engage, organize and lead diverse groups of school community members in designing and painting CEM murals at seven San Diego Unified Schools.
The objective of this program is to build the capacity of leadership and engagement among diverse school communities through the arts.
CEM Leadership Teams
- In order to participate, a site must form a CEM leadership team
- CEM leadership teams are made up of 3 diverse school community members
- “Members” include: students, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, or school community members
- The leadership team works together to complete the online application
- If accepted to the program, the CEM leadership team:
- Attends the CEM Leadership Trainings
- Zoom introductory zoom session (1.5 hours)- Tuesday January 25
- Zoom concept/planning process session (1 hour)- Tuesday February 22
- In person technical workshop (3 hour)- Saturday March 12 at location TBD
- Engages, organizes and leads a larger diverse group of school community stakeholders in collaboratively designing and painting a public mural at their school
- Attends the CEM Leadership Trainings

- You must have your principal’s approval to apply to this program
- Online applications must be completed by CEM leadership teams (one member must serve as PRIMARY contact)
- Sites may each submit only ONE online application
- The online application is open until Friday, Dec. 17 at 11:59 pm
- Applicants will be notified on January 10 of their acceptance status
CEM Leadership Training-
1.5 hour intro zoom, 1 hour zoom check in/sharing of preliminary concepts and planning process, 3 hour Saturday hands on workshop
- Schools accepted to the CEM program send their CEM leadership teams to the virtual and physical trainings, at which they will learn strategies and techniques for engaging, organizing and leading a diverse group of school community members in collaboratively designing and painting a public mural at their school
- VAPA will pay each teacher their workshop rate for each hour of attendance at the workshop trainings.
Materials Funding – Up to $500
- Once CEM posses have finalized the design of their murals, CEM leadership teams will submit final designs and itemized materials and tools budgets to VAPA to receive up to $500 in materials funding
- Materials and tools that can be funded include paint, brushes, tarps, etc.

- 1 step stool
- 1 6’ step ladder
- 1 8’ step ladder
- 20’ Reusable drop cloth/tarp
- Set of stiff bristle brushes
- Shade canopy
- Digital projector
Public Unveiling
- VAPA will support the sharing of a public unveiling of the finished mural within and beyond the school community, including a press release
