While we celebrate the dog days of summer and prepare for the upcoming new school year, we’d like to bring attention to one of our highlights of the 2023-2024 school year; the San Diego Unified School District High School Honors Orchestra Concert. This event was held at the San Diego Civic Theatre. As the VAPA Foundation, we were proud to support this event, which showcased the remarkable talent and dedication of young musicians in our community.

The evening buzzed with anticipation as families, friends, and community members gathered to witness the culmination of months of hard work and practice. For these students, stepping onto the stage of the San Diego Civic Theatre was a blend of nerves and excitement, knowing they were about to share their musical achievements with a supportive audience.

The concert program was a testament to the diversity and skill of the performers:
- “Tre Corali” (1930), No. 3 – Johann Sebastian Bach, orch. Ottorino Respighi: Respighi’s orchestration brought new life to Bach’s timeless melodies, showcasing the orchestra’s dynamic range and sensitivity.
- Symphony No. 3 (1995, rev. 1996), Movement IV – Philip Glass: Philip Glass’s minimalist style was on full display, challenging the orchestra with intricate rhythms and patterns that captivated the audience.
- “Anthem for Strings” (2022) – Andrea Casarrubios: A contemporary composition that resonated with emotive themes, highlighting the creativity and innovation of young composers today.
- Symphony No. 1 (1931/1932), IV. Presto – Florence Price: Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 blended classical forms with spiritual influences, showcasing the orchestra’s versatility and depth.

For these talented students, performing at the Civic Theatre was more than just a concert—it was a milestone that underscored their dedication and growth as musicians. Their performances not only entertained but also inspired, reminding us of the transformative power of music in our lives.
The VAPA Foundation’s support was pivotal in bringing this event to fruition, enriching the musical education of these students and instilling in them a sense of accomplishment and pride. As the final notes echoed through the Civic Theatre, the applause was thunderous—a testament to the audience’s appreciation for the hard work and talent displayed on stage. They had not only performed admirably but had also proven their ability to rise to the occasion and deliver an exceptional musical experience.
