Eric Blau is a passionate advocate for the power of arts education. A retired Kaiser physician, volunteer faculty member of the UCSD medical school, as well as accomplished photographer, he is excited to join the VAPA Foundation board and advocate for expanded creative opportunities for students in SDUSD.

Son of a professional photographer, Eric Blau has been photographing since childhood. His photographs have been exhibited and collected in museums and galleries in North America, Europe and Asia. Highlights of his career include the publication of “Common Heroes” (1989), consisting of interviews and photographs of terminally ill people. It was chosen by New American Writing and the USIA to be included in the catalog, “Best of the U.S. Small Presses.” For decades, his art work was aided by the Polaroid Corporation with Artist Support Grants.

A graduate of UCSD Medical School, he practiced as an internist at Kaiser, as well as teaching at the UCSD medical school. Highlights of his medical career include being honored with several residents’ teaching awards, and retired from UCSD with the title of Clinical Professor of Medicine. He also was chosen as a member of the National Academies of Practice, where he was on the writing committee for their position papers on Health Care Reform (2008) and Preventive Medicine (2010). At Kaiser, he was Chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine for many years.
